Drayton Hall

We spent our Labor Day morning out at an old plantation in the area called Drayton Hall.  We thankfully learned about a program in the summer called Blue Star Museums that has free admission for military personnel and families into certain museums.  Drayton Hall was on the list, so we scored a super cheap outing that was a fun history lesson for all of us.  (This is a monumental feat considering how expensive the plantation tours are around here!)

Drayton Hall is a beautiful home that is over 275 years old and has been preserved and restored but not remodeled!  7 generations of Drayton family have lived here!

The tiny ant people at the bottom are me and 'R' counting windows for her scavenger hunt!

We saw beautiful plaster ceilings.  One of which was original to when the house was built and has never been re-done.  Amazing considering the age of the house and humid climate of SC!

We saw beautiful mahogany woodwork.  Len marveled at this!  Each banister pole and side decoration were so detailed and uniform.  It's hard to believe that these were all done by hand!  (Sadly at the expense of enslaved hands!)

The Drayton family had a growth chart on one corner wall!  They still get together each year for Thanksgiving here at this house and continue marking on this wall!

We also got a little laugh out of seeing this pile of columns in the basement.  Apparently (according to a log that was found) Mr Drayton ordered new columns but never used them.  They were stored in the basement back in 1815 and have been there ever since!  Just goes to show that some home improvements never get completed!

The older girls enjoyed doing a scavenger hunt through the house and grounds, learning fun facts as they went.  The younger two just enjoyed the big lawn they could run free in!

I am excited because I can now check this off of my SC bucket list!
