Standby to Standby

In the military it is common to do what is called hurry up and wait. Because so much of what you do is dependent on someone else also doing their job or giving you permission to do your job frequently you standby to standby. We thought my packet for commissioning was going before the CARE (commissioning) Board on July 8th, and that we would know something about our future by the end of the week. Now that has changed.
My packet is now going before the July 22nd CARE Board (though i'm not sure they actually 'care' about anything). My recruiter told me to expect to hear something the next day. The mad rush to get my packet together has now given way to the waiting game. Thank God Kara got me a Wii for my birthday!!
This news was very disappointing to me, but I'm trying to remember a valuable lesson I learned on my first visit to the Navy Chaplain School in Newport, RI. The Drill Instructor we had over us taught us the lesson of Semper Gumby. "Always be flexible." Go with the flow...roll with the punches...learn and adapt.
So...let's just say we're not writing our Thanksgiving or Christmas plans on the calendar in ink.
