Field Trip

The big excitement in our house this week has been a field trip. 'R's class had a field trip to the Firehouse planned for today and 'B', 'N', and myself tagged along. Since 'R' has been talking about fire safety this week at school, 'B' and I spent time during our "school" to discuss it as well. It was a good thing for us to talk about smoke alarms, how to get out of the house through windows, a safe meeting place, stop - drop - and roll ('B's favorite), and dialing 911 in an emergency. Things that I realized I really hadn't taken the time to discuss.

So all week long, the girls have been talking about this field trip and asking over and over about when it was. 'R' was incredibly excited to get to ride a school bus for the first time. When we got to the fire house, 'B' was all smiles, jumping around on the sidewalk for 5 minutes while we waited for the school group. However as soon as we walked into the firehouse, 'B' became Miss Bashful. She hid behind me, clung to my leg, and wouldn't make eye contact with any of the firefighters. Once the "tour" started and we were looking around at where the firefighters live, eat, sleep, etc. all 'B' would do was cry! 'R' was great. She was soaking it all in. 'N' was great. She was perched in the sling just watching everything. But 'B' never cheered up. For some reason the fire house, fire fighters, fire trucks, everything was scary to her. She wouldn't let me take more than a step away from her and continued to cling to my leg, hand or arm the whole time. She smiled for one picture that 'R's teacher took of us and that was it. 'R' loved every minute of it all. She'll probably be talking about it for days and wanting to go back. Such opposites!

Considering it was our first field trip, overall it was successful. 'B' is not always at her best when she is out of the comfort of home and familiar places, but she'll get there. Hopefully she learned just a tiny bit of information today and maybe the next field trip won't be so scary.
